My Sewing Machine Gets a Second Life

About a year ago I attended a craft meetup, and someone had brought their mother's old sewing machine to give away. It works perfectly, the only problem is that it's missing the "stick" on top that holds the thread! It was completely broken off. I had wanted a sewing machine for quite some time so I figured if it were given to me for free, I could surely find a way to fix it.

But I was stumped. That sewing machine sat around for almost a year. Until one day it dawned on me...MIGHTY PUTTY! My hubby loves infomercials and thinks his mighty putty is the greatest stuff ever, but it's not every day he actually gets to use it. He was more than willing (and I think a little excited) to help me fix my sewing machine. I found a small stick that came with some scrapbooking rub-ons that worked well as a makeshift "thread stick." (Does anyone know the actual name for this?)

Prepping the mighty putty. This takes concentration...
Adhering to the sewing machine...
All finished...just needs to set overnight! Ok, the close-up looks, well, you know...weird.
It may look a little funny, but it works! I don't sew often, so it doesn't make sense for me to spend a lot of money on a nice new one when this one works perfectly.
