Thanksgiving Tablescape & DIY Turkey Napkin Rings

Hi everyone!

I feel like I've neglected my blog. I've had family in town and am finally catching up, but it was so nice to visit with my parents, aunt, and uncle. My cousin lives up the street from me and we decided to have Thanksgiving dinner at her house this year. Her parents came from Phoenix and my parents from San Diego, and for the first time ever our families celebrated Thanksgiving together! (We were really missing my sister and my other cousin, though!)

My cousin set up a beautiful table. I love her eclectic style with the mismatched, yet matching dishes, and all of the candles flowing across the table.

And I wanted to show you a close-up of the cute little turkey napkin rings I made. My aunt sent my cousin these felt turkeys and some ribbon that she picked up at Joann fabric & crafts. My cousin handed them to me the week before and said "Here, I have no idea what to do with these but I'm sure you do!" So I made napkin rings.
They were pretty simple. I formed a ring with wired ribbon and attached with velcro at the back so they're easy to put around the napkins. She sent orange and olive green burlap-style ribbon. Then I cut strips of the orange ribbon and my CTMH burlap ribbon and formed loops to add behind the turkeys for some added texture. I hot-glued the loops to the backs of the turkeys, then hot-glued the turkeys to the ribbon rings. To finish them off, I added yellow Stickles on the feathers and a dot on the face for some sparkle. Easy peasy.

Here's my uncle and me before dinner. Sadly, this is the only photo I got on my phone with people in it. My mom took tons of pictures but I don't have them yet.

The day before Thanksgiving my mom, hubby, and I went to the Apple store to get my new iPhone 5!!! My parents got it for me as an early birthday present :) The thing I'm most excited about with the iPhone 5 is the improved camera, since I use my phone as my primary point-and-shoot camera. So after I got it, I went out in the parking lot and took my first photo...me as a proud new iPhone 5 owner :)

My mom and I made some Christmas cards and I've been working on lots of other crafts, so I'll be back soon with more to share. (I need to catch up on photo-editing now!)

How to Use CTMH's Alcohol Markers & Pigment Inks

I am so excited about CTMH's new alcohol markers. They are HALF the price of Copic markers, yet a similar quality. (The main difference between the 2 is that CTMH's are disposable.) They come income in sets of 2...one that is CTMH's true exclusive color, and one that is a shade darker or lighter so you can blend.

You may remember this project I made using these awesome markers, and the video tutorial I made.

I also love CTMH's new pigment ink pads. They make for a more rich, vibrant stamped image and are more opaque than our regular dye-based inks.

You may remember this card that I made with pigment ink...

Check out this video from CTMH corp to give you more details and instructions on how to use these 2 wonderful new products.

You'll also want to be sure to watch this video, which shows the difference between using pigment inks vs. dye inks.

Happy inking!

Coordinating CTMH Stamps With Cricut Cuts

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE our Cricut cartridges?! I swear I could create a different project every day for the rest of my life just with these 2 cartridges. The BONUS is that each cartridge also comes with 3 stamp sets and 3 sets of chipboard pieces that coordinate with the Cricut cuts! Plus dozens more CTMH stamp sets in the Idea Book that will coordinate with your cartridges!

The best part? CTMH's MyAcrylix stamps are CLEAR so you can see exactly where you're stamping and make sure you stamp your image perfectly onto your Cricut cut.

Check out this great video from CTMH's "Clearly the Best" series on unique ways to stamp coordinating Cricut® shapes and add them to your artwork.

Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat Baby Boy Frame

I was SO excited when I had a returning Etsy customer order this frame from me. When she told me "Dr. Seuss theme" I instantly had tons of ideas swirling around in my head.

BRIGHT colors.
FUN Cat in the Hat stripes.
VIVID patterns.

I used CTMH's retired Animal Cookies paper pack, but I replaced the Tulip red (which is kind of pinkish), with Holiday Red, which is more vibrant to match the Cat in the Hat. I used the patterns from the pack that don't include Tulip. Lots of fun numbers, circles, and stripes.

For the Holiday Red squares I used cardstock, but to jazz it up a bit and add some interest I stamped them with the grid pattern from my favorite Universal Backgrounds stamp set. This set is seriously one of my most used. It has a pattern for just about any project. You may remember most recently I used the music notes background on my Advent Calendar. The squares are cut at 1-3/4" and the white squares with the letters are 1-1/2". The letters themselves are cut on the Artiste Cricut cartridge at 1".

I found the Cat in the Hat images online, then sized them and printed them onto glossy photo paper right from my home printer. Then I cut them out with my handy dandy ultra-sharp micro-tip scissors. I used the arrow and star from the Milepost Shapes and used an Acylic Paint Dabber from Ranger in Snow Cap to add some distressed white, then when it was dry I inked the edges with black StazOn ink. (BTW I love the Acrylic Paint Dabber...it was my first time using it. It's so much cleaner to be able to dab the paint right from the bottle.)

I also made this matching card for my customer to include with the frame since she's giving it as a Baby Shower gift. The "baby boy" stamp is from the retired set Sweet Baby.

Thanks for stopping by!

If you'd like to order a custom-designed {What's in a Frame}, check out my Etsy shop.

If you'd like to make your own, order your CTMH supplies HERE! I'm offering FREE SHIPPING in November on CTMH orders of $50 or more. Detail here.

Why Handmade Means More: Gifts from the Heart

The holiday season is coming up fast — have you started your shopping yet? What are you going to get for those few people on your list who are impossible to shop for? What do you give to that person that seems to have everything? If you’ve got some question marks on your list this year, try giving something handmade.

Why handmade? There are many reasons that a gift you make yourself is more meaningful than what you can get off the shelf:
  • Time — is there anything more valuable? Once you’ve given your time to something, you can never get it back. When you put your valuable time into making something personal and unique, you are giving one of the most valuable things you have.
  • Personal Touch — everything you create is infused with a part of you. A gift that you created is much more likely to remind the recipient of you simply because it carries the signature of your creativity.
  • Customizable — don’t spend hours in stores looking in vain for just the right thing. With a handmade gift, you can make something just right by tailoring it to what you know about the person you are giving it to.
  • Rarity — when you make something handmade, you are creating an item that is unique. That uniqueness adds value to the gift because there is nothing else like it. It is a gift that only you can give.
There is no limit to the handmade gifts you can give this year. A beautiful card or scrapbook page may be just the right thing, or a decorated picture frame, jewelry box, or wall art. Let your creativity shine this holiday season and give something that means a little more — give something handmade.

Look through Close to my Heart's Idea Book for some inspiration, and browse around my blog. My {What's in a Frame} decor is always a hit and makes a perfect gift!

Feel free to email me if you have any questions: jaymalew [at] gmail [dot] com.
